Of special note here is Commissioner Robertson asking Commissioner Creech his position on holding to the previous commission’s support last year for the landfill building project not exceeding $1 million. Rodney had supported that as a candidate (on video) but there has been some question of that support now that he is a commissioner. The good news is he reiterated his previous support and I hope it continues.
I’ll put it this way; we have what has been the most expensive landfill in the state and it can only survive financially with the bilking of the Preble County taxpayer with an exorbitant landfill assessment. On top of that the rates to dump in Preble County are so darn high that the only reason it gets any waste at all is because a previous county commission instituted rules that forced all county trash to be dumped there – Flow Control. It became clear last year that even with both of those draconian measures another rise in the fees was going to be needed unless more trash could be attracted. That led to what is now a two-tiered price structure that finds Preble County taxpayers paying more to use their landfill than out of county users. This has led to Butler County bring tons of sewage to the landfill which has helped financially. Still though – it is a landfill. Everyone that works there knew the conditions when they started and it does not need a fancy building. Many people feel a couple construction trailers could do it.
The previous commission repeatedly by a 2-1 measure (Robertson & Wesler) wanted the cost brought down. There has been repeated back and forth with claims by Randy Gilbert that it could not be done even as the price did come down. I attended some of those meetings, listened to all of them and I have had a nagging feeling that this was a B.S. dance with the knowledge that at some point the project needed to start and the commission being under the gun would agree to a more expensive project. We are in that time frame. My suspicion after the March 5 meeting was that the game of chicken was being played with Commissioner Day caving on cost, Commissioner Robertson holding the cost to previous commission agreement and Commissioner Creech absent. Rodney at this March 9 meeting holds to the previous commission commitment and his previous position. This is going to get interesting as action on the building project needs to start and should have already been underway.

Rodney discusses fairgrounds meeting on grant and says the final meeting was held Thursday March 12. Should have something by the end of the week.
Denise mentions Generals & Cougars basketball game.
15 Minute mark Commissioner Robertson on landfill building expense (Rodney missed last week). Previous commission (last year) had instructed Randy Gilbert to keep the project cost under $1,000,000. Would like to know where Rodney stands. Rodney sticks with his agreement on the price as he stated about six months ago. He has received a lot of feedback on it. Good for Rodney & Denise. Security discussed and remote location. Fixed costs…vs. size.
