The Preble County Commissioners changed the vacation policy. This issue had been brought up a few meetings ago by Becky Sorrell. Employees were accumulating three years of vacation time before retirement and it was putting a strain on the department budget and resources. The budget would not allow for a new employee until the retiring one had been paid out and this could leave six weeks or more of being short staffed. ORC had allowed for the three years unless there was a policy in place locally that over ruled it. Preble’s had one but had not enforced it, Policy 5.03 was amended with new language and time will tell if it is enforced.
The possibility of taking some out of county trash at the Preble County Landfill was mentioned as a means of keeping down the cost to county taxpayers. The original assessments were based on 40,000 tons a year but is now only getting around 32,000 tons. The shortfall when combined with higher regulatory expenses and other factors such as commission incompetence to address fiscal issues earlier led to a 44% increase in the assessment last fall and an increase in the tipping fee.
