V. PUBLIC COMMENTS

2.5 Minute mark   My visit. Audio issue  I was at the podium for this meeting and have never noticed the audio issue with past meetings.

Last week Shawnda Combs made a request for an additional 3% bed tax and I stated my position at this meeting that I posted last week. It was for 2% and representation from New Paris / Jefferson Township on the Preble County Development Board. I left with the impression that they did not take the offer. I had advance advice that the proposed Public Hearing will be stuffed with member or supporters of the Preble County Development Board in favor of the 3%. Some of the attitude displayed here reflected that advance information and I would like to thank the member who passed it along.

Having a competitive tax rate should not even be an argument I have to make, it should be a no brainer. The Indiana side has more restaurant options, shopping options, movie theaters and a dedicated Tourism Center a half mile from the Exit.  It seems every time this issue comes up I hear what other parts of Ohio are doing on this issue but the thing is Ohio has one of the worst climates for business or businesses would not keep leaving and the population with it. The motel competition at the Stateline is in Indiana. If Preble County wants to stop the sales tax drain then it should pursue retail growth at the Stateline where there is already a strong base of support on the Indiana side. If we want to talk Butler and Warren County in Ohio, they both have lower sales tax rates before adding a 3% bed tax. Preble has a 7% sales tax rate while Butler has a 6.25% sales tax rate and Warren a 6.5% sales tax rate.
