CVB QUARTERLY MEETING
Jean Bussell, Jeff Sewert & Abby Noland
Jean starts:
Distributing brochures for events and restaurants.
5.5 Minute mark Apple Fest not included.
Taffy's wrong phone number.
20,000 Covered Bridge Brochures also being distributed.

9 Minute mark Received 501- C6 tax status from IRS.
10 Minute mark Hoover & Roberts has donated their accounting time to get reports in order.
Still have vacancies on board but happy with the nine current members.
11.5 Minute mark Discussion on expanding Shawnda Combs secretary's hours to work on behalf of the Histori – the CVB.
Jean spent three hours folding brochures.
Would like the County Commission to consider a grant to them in the amount of $15,000 to support the expansion of the staffing capacity. Aware of limitations to county budget. Has some good contract models from the Ohio National Road (Dave Wesler, Jeff Sewert and Jane Lightner served together on it in the past) and Park District.
14.5 Minute mark Dave Wesler asks if there have been any discussion with the other two CVBs about getting more of a standard brochure for the whole county. To the best of my knowledge the New Paris CVB has yet to produce a brochure as I have asked about it a couple times.
Dave meant the others help with the brochures and then purchase some also.
New Paris CVB bought 1000 Covered Bridge Brochures for their own distribution.
Jean – My sense is that they are each very focused on their areas of interest. Mentions how nice the Hueston Woods CVB booth info and website are…. They have put money into things that really are specific to Hueston Woods…Mentions that 5000 more of the Visitors Guides would cost $2,500.
Being careful on spending pending the cost of the first audit.
18.5 Minute mark Dave explains the rising cost in the budget….feels it is unfortunate that everything is not pulled together.
20.5 Minute mark Abby Noland offers review of Wayne County Tourism event.
150 people attended.
Mentions complaints of nobody wanting to work together… little pockets of my territory..
Lady from Holland Michigan was main speaker.
Listen to the audio as this is worth listening to if you have an interest in this.
Mentions infighting.
Clarification of areas of responsibility – whose job is whose.
Unified position.
Hardest part was those people that were so invested in their particular event it was hard to let go.
Twenty five year plan and had to meet regularly.
Knows a Professor from Sinclair. who would be from outside at no cost.
26 Minute mark A claim of a $15 return for every $1 spent was made. I consider this a BS claim that grows every few years. When Shawnda Combs first presented it a couple years ago she used $13 and I can remember years ago hearing the claim of $9. I ask that you consider that those figures exceed even the return expected from Bernie Madoff. "Concerns about Madoff's business surfaced as early as 1999, when financial analyst Harry Markopolos informed the SEC that he believed it was legally and mathematically impossible to achieve the gains Madoff claimed to deliver" He is in jail but, the claim is made by government as an excuse to tax you under another claim it will get people to spend more. If this claim was true the country would never go into recession and we all would retire at 30. You will never hear a legitimate business promise a 15 to 1 return to secure funding – only government. If there really was a 15 -1 return on investment the county sales tax collections would have gone through the roof. The commission would be throwing money at and begging the CVB to spend more so they would have more sales tax revenue and that is not happening. Instead the sales tax revenue more accurately resembles a slow recovery from an economic downturn and given the jump in June unemployment to 7.8% from 6.9% even that recovery is questionable. It could just as easily be claimed that the unemployment figures show the incompetence of the past commission with the raising of taxes.
Discussion on Wayne County Tourism bureau budget and how they get it.
7 million vehicles pass by each year on I-70.
Put a road sign 45 minutes ahead traveling wise. It is essential.
You are not going to bring people off the highway if it is just the Apple Fest. You are not going to bring people off the highway if it is just the Pork Fest. Offering multiple reasons. Collaboration. Richmond CVB wants to collaborate and is coming to the September County CVB meeting.
Indiana – Biggest marketing right now is agricultural. How food is made.
Mentions YouTube & Pure Michigan promotional video. This has spawned parody a video.
Mentions that Indiana and Colorado cut back their tourism budget and regret it. Has study.
Chris Day went to Traverse City last week.
Jean Bussell mentions collaboration with Oxford.
36 Minute mark Dave mentions visit from Fair Ground manager and sheep show. Asks about collaboration with other CVBs
37 Minute mark Jean Bussell – It is really hard to constantly be the one reaching out to Hueston Woods and New Paris. I mean because they are very focused on their own thing. Yes they respond but it hard to be the one called and then always have to reach out to them. It's just it doesn't feel good. When our resources are the smallest and we are expected to cover the most territory, it is very difficult.
Chris Day – It has got to be a two way street.
Good meeting
