CVB Board & My Resignation – Goose Creek

This meeting was Kyle Cross’s first as Preble County Engineer. He ran unopposed in the election last week. The department saved a good bit of money because of a light winter and has a lot of salt for next winter.

File 4 has the issue of who is in charge or should be in charge of making appointments to the Preble County CVB Board. This issue had been discussed for an extended time at the February, CVB meeting and I thought it was settled with the commission having the control. I recall offering to go with our President to a commission meeting and discuss the issue but voiced my opinion at least several times that we would lose. Bob was ready to attend the afternoon CVB board meeting for confrontation but the calmer minds prevailed. Bob went on to offer his view that a couple unnamed board members should either come to the conclusion or resign. The issue was on the CVB board agenda for a vote by name that afternoon. I have no idea if the vote was ever held as I resigned before that point. While discussing the conflict of interest policy a suggestion (as I recall) was made along the lines that a board member doing their own promotion of county events may be a conflict. I asked if that meant my putting events and such on my websites as I have done for years and the answer as I recall was; “It could be”.  Had the Board taken my advice and recorded audio of the meetings an accurate record would exist. At that point I said; “I am done” got up, had a short discussion at the door on how long it was taking to get things accomplished and left. My time is better spent on my business countering the upcoming adverse effects of an incompetent county commission decision to levy a tax that puts lodging in Preble County at a point higher that Richmond. I attended the February, Jefferson Township Trustee meeting with candidates Denise Robertson and Eric White and Bob made a comment along the line that I was stalling the CVB. Obviously a current board member gave Bob that opinion. It is an interesting opinion as the commission’s appointed liaison offered her view before I left that the CVB was still months away from even getting the 501c3 tax exempt status. All I can say is that Bob can now gage the speed at which things move along. I fully understand the CVB board President’s reasoning for board control. It is apparent from the March 6, election that there is a great deal of dissatisfaction with the misinformation and policies of this commission that could adversely impact the ability to solicit donations to the CVB. Last fall when this CVB was created it was apparent that no lodging facility wanted the tax.

44.5 Minute mark    Commissioner Day -What's your thoughts on the CVB gentleman?

Discussion on request to have the CVB appoint members instead of commission.

Commissioner Stonecash – There's two members of that Board that are more concerned with themselves than with Preble County. I think it is either time they come to that conclusion or resign from the board themselves. Bob did not mention whom he was talking about but I resigned from the CVB on Monday afternoon.

Commissioner Wesler mentions other boards and how they are handled.

48 Minute mark    Mention of attending the CVB board meeting this afternoon.

I have no idea if there was a vote as I had left before that point. I was however surprised to see it on the agenda as an active resolution. It had been discussed at the previous meeting and my impression was the matter had been settled with the commission having control of appointments.

File 6

Commissioner Wesler -…I have been listening to the people and there is so much unrest in the community, in the county about Goose Creek Crossing. There is a lot of misinformation a lot of people think that we will be raising their taxes. Which we're not. There is a lot of people that think we are going to run the General Fund down to zero and into debt. Which retain a healthy balance in the General Fund. You guys recognize and we realize that when we went back and visited various counties that like Mercer County was lowest or highest in the state in unemployment back 15-20 years ago. But they formed this economic development board and moved forward and got their infrastructure in place. And now they have one of the lowest unemployment in the state. Best to listen to this file and it is worth a listen.

Dave makes a claim just past the four minute mark that he has had lots of people say they support Goose Creek.  The vote on March 6 did not reflect the that view as one commissioner was defeated and the other had almost 65% vote for someone else. If our county government relied on a vote of confidence to continue the Goose Creek issue would be dead.
