Broadband Internet – Tour of Fairgrounds

File 5  covers a discussion on the topic of Broadband that had occurred at the previous nights Preble County Development Partnership meeting. I found this one a bit frustrating as it was mentioned that Com Net representatives were at the meeting about a recently awarded grant to install fiber optic cable as a “middle mile” option in the county. Apparently CenturyLink also had representatives at the meeting and there was evidently some surprise when they announced that they already had that capability in Preble County. There should have been no surprise as from day one of the Connect Ohio meetings in this county I have brought up the topic multiple times at numerous meetings. A number of years ago Sprint had work crews laying fiber optic cable throughout the county.  The first Connect Ohio meeting was in May of 2009 and it is totally incomprehensible to me that this issue was not brought to the Commissioners attention long ago. I brought it up at meetings before and after the group made pitches for county involvement in building another fiber optic loop. The main Sprint contractor was Henkle & McCoy and they had opened up an office in Greenville at the time. A good bit of the actual work was subcontracted and done by a company called Mastek out of Miami, Florida; they had crews burying fiber optic cable throughout Preble County.  Sprint eventually became CenturyLink. I had many crews stay at my motel over the course of at least a year. The Preble County / Connect Ohio effort seemed to always go back to wanting the county to have its own fiber loop and it just made no sense knowing there was already fiber optic cable there that covered more of the county and could be operated by a company with far more resources than Preble County.

Commissioner Stonecash – Ok ahh I am going to ask this question pertaining to Broadband.

Commissioner Day – chuckling

Commissioner Stonecash – Everybody is talking about this all I ever you hear constantly about Broadband. Last evening at the Preble County Development Partnership meeting a fellow from Com Net.

Discussion on bringing fiber optic cable through the area.  Century Link claims to already have a loop and the ability to do this.

Discussion on both Com Net and Century Link both providing middle mile and who will cover the last mile.

16  minute mark   Commissioner Wesler – mentions that previously people had been in chambers and said the cost would be around $40 a month and that his wife has them set up with the phone company (CenturyLink) for around $55.

Commissioner Stonecash – We found out last night that Reid finds it too expensive to find the services they need to com to Preble County.

17  minute mark    Commissioner Day – The two gentlemen from Century Link that were there last night said it was the first they had heard about it. Well guys check with the person you refer to as a Chamber employee because I brought up Sprint/CenturyLink having a fiber loop multiple times.  He should have been paying attention. I even asked multiple times what happens if someone else gets money to do this and CenturyLink brings up the fact they already have the ability.  I remember others refering to it as "Dark fiber" and at least one person saying that he had not seen any fiber on poles.  The stuff was buried, I remember they had tto redo something like a thousand feet of it on Rt. 35 because of issues with another contractor and I remember seeing them buring it on 732 on trips to Oxford. Someone should have been paying attention.  Aaron French who lives in Preble County, has a business in THE COUNTY and attended the first Connect Ohio meeting offers a solution for residents on the last mile BluSky Wireless.   Here is a map of his coverage area:

18.75  minute mark    Commissioner Wesler –  Wasn't Matt (Matt Appenzeller, previously referred to as a Chamber employee) in here at one time and we said go ahead and pursue it?
